Loving and Learning in Lodi September 29 2019

As I’ve been pondering this week’s sermon, the lyrics from a song in Momma Mia! keep running through my head:

Money. Money. Money.
Always sunny in the rich man’s world!
All the things I could do if I had a little money!
It’s a rich man’s world.

Humans have always needed a way to obtain necessities from each other. Some cultures work with a bartering system, exchanging goods and services with each other. Our culture uses money. Daily we are enticed to buy the next latest, greatest ‘stuff’! To help us gain a perspective on money, we’ll look at Jesus and his teachings about money in the gospels.

                   Freely, Freely                                       verses 1 & 2                      #389

“Stop collecting treasures for your own benefit on earth, where moth and rust eat them and where thieves break in and steal them. Instead, collect treasures for yourselves in heaven, where moth and rust don’t eat them and where thieves don’t break in and steal them. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

“The eye is the lamp of the body. Therefore, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how terrible that darkness will be! No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be loyal to the one and have contempt for the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.

Loving and Learning in Lodi September 22 2019

The gift of children…their energy, their curiosity, their imaginations, their openness to life!

The gift of childhood…a time of learning, a time of playing, a time of growing into being an adult.

There are several passages in the Gospels where Jesus interacts with children or references them in his teaching. We’ll dive into those passages this week.

Liturgist:       Jeff Van Loon                                               Greeters: Bob & Dee Heitkamp
Hymns:        Tell Me the Stories of Jesus                      verses 1 & 2                      #277
                   Like a Child                                           verses 1 - 3                       TFWS #2092
I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry        verses 1 - 7                      TFWS #2051

People were bringing children to Jesus so that he would bless them. But the disciples scolded them. When Jesus saw this, he grew angry and said to them, “Allow the children to come to me. Don’t forbid them, because God’s kingdom belongs to people like these children. I assure you that whoever doesn’t welcome God’s kingdom like a child will never enter it.” Then he hugged the children and blessed them.

Loving and Learning in Lodi September 15 2019

I enjoy learning new things! I enjoy taking classes and usually do best when I’m accountable to others. I’ve been in classrooms in different states and even different countries. Education and learning is important to me.

As we ‘hang out’ with Jesus this fall, I’m wondering how he became such an incredible Rabbi/teacher? As a human being, when, where, how did he learn? This week we’ll look at the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke & John) to see what hints we can find that give us some clues.

Each year his parents went to Jerusalem for the Passover Festival. When he was 12 years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to their custom. After the festival was over, they were returning home, but the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents didn’t know it. Supposing that he was among their band of travelers, they journeyed on for a full day while looking for him among their family and friends. When they didn’t find Jesus, they returned to Jerusalem to look for him. After three days they found him in the temple. He was sitting among the teachers, listening to them and putting questions to them. Everyone who heard him was amazed by his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were shocked.

His mother said, “Child, why have you treated us like this? Listen! Your father and I have been worried. We’ve been looking for you!”

Jesus replied, “Why were you looking for me? Didn’t you know that it was necessary for me to be in my Father’s house?”  But they didn’t understand what he said to them.

Jesus went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. His mother cherished every word in her heart. Jesus matured in wisdom and years, and in favor with God and with people.

Loving and Learning in Lodi

When I was pondering the sermon series for this fall, I decided the best thing to do together would be to hang out with Jesus! We’ll look at what Jesus said and did regarding different subjects throughout the next few months. This week we look at “Jesus and the Bible.” What was Jesus’ interaction with the scriptures?... which at that time were the Old Testament writings.

Hymns:         Wonderful Words of Life                             verses 1 – 3                         #600
                     Thy Word Is a Lamp                                   verses 1 & 2                        #601
                     O Word of God Incarnate                           verses 1 - 3                         #598
to the tune of #278 Hosanna, Loud Hosanna

Jesus returned from the Jordan River full of the Holy Spirit, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. There he was tempted for forty days by the devil. He ate nothing during those days and afterward Jesus was starving. The devil said to him, “Since you are God’s Son, command this stone to become a loaf of bread.”

Jesus replied, “It’s written, People won’t live only by bread.”

Next the devil led him to a high place and showed him in a single instant all the kingdoms of the world. The devil said, “I will give you this whole domain and the glory of all these kingdoms. It’s been entrusted to me and I can give it to anyone I want. Therefore, if you will worship me, it will all be yours.”

Jesus answered, “It’s written, You will worship the Lord your God and serve only him.”

The devil brought him into Jerusalem and stood him at the highest point of the temple. He said to him, “Since you are God’s Son, throw yourself down from here; for it’s written: He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you and they will take you up in their hands so that you won’t hit your foot on a stone.”

Jesus answered, “It’s been said, Don’t test the Lord your God. After finishing every temptation, the devil departed from him until the next opportunity.
